Title: Kerr magnetometry in the light of ion accelerators
Abstract: Magneto-Optical Kerr Effect is a widely extended technique used for the study of magnetism, both in the macro- and nanoscale. Its simplicity, relatively low cost and the huge amount of information that it provides have set this technique as one of the most popular ways for rapidly accessing the magnetic properties of materials. In ion accelerators, where beams of ionized atoms are used for testing properties of materials as well as for creating damage or causing changes on them, this technique allows to probe magnetic properties during the bombardment process, without altering the ion’s trajectory or the way they interact with matter. This is because, first, it is a “photon in-photon out” technique and second, because the power of the light used as a probe is in the range of just a few mW. In this seminar the Kerr magnetometry technique and the magnetic properties that can be studied with it will be explained, together with the potentiality of application in ion accelerators.
