Title: Solving PCB Recycling with X-Rays: Automated Microfluidics & PCB component sorting
Abstract: Recycling printed circuit boards (PCBs) from e-waste is essential to recover valuable and critical materials needed for today’s technologies. We present an integrated approach that improves both the efficiency and sustainability of PCB recycling. First, we introduce an automated microfluidic system equipped with online X-ray fluorescence (XRF). This tool quickly and accurately measures metal concentrations in both liquid phases during extraction, allowing us to understand how the process works in less than 13 hours while using very small amounts of liquid. In parallel, we developed a sorting prototype that sorts electronic components based on their composition, using machine vision and multi-energy X-ray techniques powered by deep learning.
