Materials for Fusion

The Fusion Materials Unit of the National Fusion Laboratory has been focused on the study and characterization of insulating and structural materials for more than 35 years, emphasizing the effects of radiation.

Main lines of research:

  • Dielectric and optical materials
  • Ceramics for Tritium Breeding Blankets
  • Simulation of Radiation effects
  • Structural Materials

Mainly, the applications include fusion energy (plasma diagnostics, tritium regenerative systems, etc.), but also microelectronics and telecommunications. Focusing on the behaviour of these materials under operational conditions and the effect of radiation (ions, ionizing radiation and neutrons) with, in parallel, modelling studies of these effects. Studies of fluid dynamics (liquid metals) with application in the IFMIF and TechnoFusión facilities have begun more recently.
