Title: Study of reaction mechanisms for weakly-bound nuclei at sub-barrier energies

Abstract: Weakly-bound nuclei have captivated the Nuclear Physics community for decades. Their distinctive features—such as halo or cluster structures and low breakup thresholds—lead to unexpected behavior in nuclear reactions, particularly with radioactive nuclei [1,2]. Below the Coulomb barrier, these effects become more apparent, with weakly-bound systems showcasing a large direct reaction component [3-5]. Our group has been dedicated to the study of both stable and radioactive weakly-bound nuclei for many years [3-8]. In this presentation, I will present recent results on the elastic scattering and breakup of the exotic halo nucleus ⁸B on a natZr target at a sub-barrier energy of 26.5 MeV (̴ 90% of the Coulomb barrier) [9,10], along with measurements of its core, ⁷Be, at several sub- and near-barrier energies to determine the behavior of the optical potential [8,11]. The experiments were carried out at the TriSol facility of the University of Notre Dame [12]. The experimental data were analyzed within an Optical Model framework and compared with CDCC calculations. From these analyses, total reaction and breakup cross sections were obtained and systematically compared with existing data for various systems. I will conclude with a discussion of the findings of this work as well as future directions and perspectives of this ongoing research.
