The Science Week is a European scientific outreach event with great attendance success, held annually since 2001. Its objectives are to attract new audiences, particularly those initially distanced from science, involve new agents and institutions in the scientific process, and make science more visible by taking it out of the spaces where it is conducted and bringing it to public spaces.
In the Comunidad the Madrid, The Science Week is organized by the General Directorate for Universities and Research of the Community of Madrid, through Madri+d Foundation for Knowledge and its aim is to encourage the development of harmonious relations between science and society and contribute to help to scientists reflect critically on the concerns of society.
CMAM participates of the Madrid Science and Innovation Week with open days and guided tours to show the accelerator hosted at the “Universidad Autónoma de Madrid”. These activities include a visit to the hall of the accelerator to explain the research conducted with the ion accelerator at CMAM and its operation
During the 22nd and 23rd editions, CMAM also organized a workshop titled “Descubre el objeto perdido”, where an experiment with the accelerator was carried out. During the 24th edition, a workshop called “De la Teoría a la Práctica: Navegando el Mundo de los Materiales” was held, using various audiovisual media to contextualize the unique aspects of the center. Visitors participated in an experiment on the identification of metals through flame testing, where they observed the characteristic colours produced by different metals. This demonstrated one of the methods historically used to identify elements in ancient times.
In the 18th edition of the Madrid Science an Innovation Week, the CMAM organized for the first time a scientific escaperoom themed around the accelerator. Addressed to Bachelor-level students, they tested and applied their knowledge in sciences by solving questions and overcome challenges to find “The lost particle“.
