The LUNA project: an underground facility for the study of nuclear reactions of astrophysical interest

Due to their extreme low cross section, fusion nuclear reactions responsible for the star evolution cannot be directly measured at the Gamow energy typical of the star inner temperature in a conventional laboratory, where the cosmic and environmental background is orders of magnitude higher than the expected signal. Indirect techniques or an extrapolation to the low-energy region were therefore needed. Due to its 2000 m rock natural schielding, Gran Sasso Underground Laboratory offers a unique opportunity: a 50 KV and a 400 kV accelerators were installed and for the first time important fusion reactions were measured below the Gamow peak. An overview of the most important obtained results, as well as the future project for a new MV machine will be discussed.
