Applications of Ion Beam Analysis and Accelerator Mass Spectrometry to cultural heritage diagnostics at CEDAD

Analytical methods based on the use of ion beams produced in particle accelerators with terminal voltages of a few MV have a well established and mature role in cultural heritage diagnostics and archaeological sciences. Among these methods those with a higher potential in this research fields are surely IBA (Ion Beam Analysis) techniques and radiocarbon dating by AMS (Accelerator Mass Spectrometry). The basics  aspects of these techniques will be reviewed together  with their potentialities in Cultural Heritage studies. The general features of the AMS-IBA facility operated at  the University of Salento in Lecce, Italy and based on a  3 MV Tandetron accelerator equipped with beam lines for  AMS, external beam PIXE-PIGE, RBS-Channeling, ion implantation and nuclear microprobe will be presented. Recent applications will be also discussed in particular those where AMS and IBA where used for the study of the same archaeometric problems such as the 14C dating and compositional analyses of the inner cores of the Riace Bronzes, the determination of the provenance of obsidians tools from 14C dated Neolithic sites in the Mediterranean and the study of the diagenetic state of cremated bones submitted to 14C dating.
