Where:
CMAM - Madrid
Category:
Informal seminars at the Accelerator

Description

Speaker: Paolo Prati, Universidad de Génova & INFN (Italy)

Airborne particulate matter is one of the most unknown and alarming atmopsheric pollutants. The natural and anthropogenic aerosols have strong interaction both with human health and with the environment (climate forcing). Long series of time and size-segregated compositional data are needed to obtain reliable information on the major sources of particulate matter both at local and at global scale. Ion Beam Analysis offer a unique opportunity in this kind of studies, making possible the analysis of large quantities of samples in short times as well as peculiar insights based on sophisticated sampling techniques. Actually, some special aerosol samplers, as the two-stage streaker and the rotating DRUM impactor, have been designed specifically for IBA. The seminar will give an introduction to several IBA application in this field with examples based on a quite long record of campaigns and studies addressed to the so called "source apportionment" i.e. the indentification of number, emission profile and impact of the particulate matter sources acting in a given context.
