Description

Growing interest in Ge and Si nanoclusters embedded in dielectrics is motivated by the prospect of the application of such structures in optoelectronic devices and nonvolatile memory elements. The compatibility of the procedures involved in the formation of these structures with conventional silicon technology and the opportunity to modify their optical properties, which are controlled by quantum-confinement (QC) effects (band gap engineering), are very attractive features. We have studied the quantum confinement effects in ensembles of Si or Ge nanocrystals (NCs) in either a silica or alumina matrix; while this study is still a work-in-progress we have already found some evidence of such QC. In this talk some of the obtained results are presented and some future possibilities are discussed.
