Titulo: Integrated on-chip amplifiers and metallic tight bends: new building blocks for the Photonics "LEGO" 

Abstract:  Photonics is one of the enabling technologies (KET) for Europe, finding applications in most aspects of current life, including consumer electronics (i.e., tablets and smart phones), telecommunications, health, manufacturing, environmental monitoring, defence and security (i.e., infrared cameras and remote sensing) and food control. For many of these applications, especially the ones where size and weight restrictions apply or for those in which very complex manipulation of light is required, the integration of many optical functions on a chip is necessary. The development of largely integrated photonic circuits has been hindered by a lack of standardization. Fortunately, recent years have seen great efforts towards the establishment of generic photonic technology platforms, such as silicon-on-insulator (SOI), indium phosphide and silicon nitride (Si3N4). The main philosophy is the development of basic building blocks (i.e., similar to “LEGO” blocks) for which the inputs and output signals are known and well-controlled.

In this seminar, I will present the current efforts at the Integrated Optical Sciences group of the University of Twente towards the development of two types of building blocks to be added to the photonics LEGO: On-chip amplifiers and lasers in rare-earth doped potassium double tungstates integrated onto silicon and silicon nitride passive photonic technology platforms as well as novel plasmonic structures to achieve very sharp bends with low losses in low contrast waveguide systems.
