2014 Campus Summer Science

Continuing with the development of the program “2014 Campus Summer Science”, organized by CEI CSIC-UAM and co-organized by the UCCUAM (Unit for Scientific Culture of the UAM) and supported by MEC, FECYT and “Fundación la Caixa”, the CMAM will carry out the activity “El aire de la ciudad bajo la lupa de un acelerador de iones”.

Students 1st high school and 4th ESO will have the opportunity to know a high-tech facility and they will be able to familiarize with its use and the physical principles that govern it, using the electrostatic ion accelerator and other CMAM facilities for a demo application.

They will come from different parts of Spain and they will know our laboratory and other UAM laboratories through different activities and guided visits that the program has organized. This activity will consist in determining the composition of suspended particulate matter in the city air, using the ion accelerator. It will follow all the steps involved in a scientific experiment. This activity will take place during the month of July and it will be divided into groups of 7 students. They will be attended by Diana Bachiller Perea (UAM PhD Student), Marcos Benedicto (PhD in Physics), Aranzazu Maira Vidal (CMAM Technical support engineer), Gonzalo Fernandez de Tejada(High School Teacher), Alessandro Zucchiatti (CMAM Director). The objectives will be:

  • - To understand the structure of matter and the physical processes of ion-matter interaction.
  • - To understand the physical principles of some techniques used for materials analysis (PIXE).
  • - To understand the processes of ion acceleration, so the functionality of an electrostatic accelerator and associated instrumentation.
  • - To design an ion beam experiment: selection of the type and number of measures in relation to the samples and the problem that the study wants to solve.
  • - To carry out the experiment following the procedure for obtaining the characteristic parameters of the materials to be studied.
  • - To analyze the results with GUPIX software.
  • - To compare and interpret the results which permit the production of a scientific conclusion.
  • - To present the results, performing a selection of the most effective results.

Open day in Physics Degree

CMAM participates in the Open day in Physics Degree for high school and IVET students that will take place on 1th April, 2014 by the Faculty of Sciences. As a part of day, which included visits to different deparments of UAM Physics, the students will visit the accelerator and will be able to carry out a small illustrative experiment.

2nd Supervision Audit to ISO 9001:2008 for the "Delivery of Ion Beams" of CMAM

The CMAM quality management system has been recently submitted to the annual revision by the company SGS ICS Ibérica.

Two years after its certification the QMS has proveed to be solid and efficient passing the revision with only an observation and zero no-conformities.

Seminars cycle on ion accelerators and associated techniques

Throughout 2014, the CMAM will offer a "Seminars cycle on ion accelerators and associated techniques". Given their informative character the seminars are open to all.

Dates:

1st seminar: Ion matter interaction and ion beam analysis. 8-05-2014.

For more information you can see the events on our homepage.
