Escape of the Bunkeroom - XVIII Science week

The UAM particle accelerator opens its doors to an escape room where besides having fun you will learn about science. You will have 60 minutes to escape from the bunker and solve the challenge.

When you are going to go into the bunkeroom you are going to find a machine capable of producing particles and accelerating them at very high speeds, almost one tenth of the speed of light. Everyday, a group of scientists produce protons, alpha particles, gold ions, silver or ... whatever happens to play with matter. But something has happened, just when we were about to make the discovery with which they would give us the Nobel Prize, we have lost a particle. We have only one hour to find it before the doors have been locked forever. Your mission will be to find the lost particle inside the bunker.

Remember, if you do not find it in an hour, you will be trapped forever.

 
Popular Science: Paper about the Summer Campus Science 2017 and the use of ion beams at CMAM

The volume of the Spanish Journal of Physics (Vol. 31, Nº4), edited by the Spanish Royal Society of Physics, includes the paper “Guías de onda ópticas: Modificando las propiedades de la materia con un acelerador de iones”. It is an informative paper about the Summer Campus Science which took place at CMAM and it consisted of modifying various materials through the use of ion beams, generating structures called waveguides that were later characterized by the analysis of the changes in their fundamental optical properties. The students learned all the steps involved in a general scientific study and in the particular case of wave guides.

 

The paper describes how the students made their own waveguides, the measurements carried out by them and the physical phenomenon studied.

 

 

 
2017 Summer Science Campus

2017 Summer Science Campus starts next July 3th. In this eighth edition will participate more than 1900 Students 1st high school and 4th ESO who will create different research projects in some Spanish universities with the Excellence International Distinctive (CEI).

 

CMAM participates again in the Summer Campus Science with the project "Cambiar las propiedades ópticas de la materia usando un acelerador de iones". The activity consists of modifying various materials through the use of ion beams, generating structures called waveguides that will be later characterized by the analysis of the changes in their fundamental optical properties. The students will learn all the steps involved in a general scientific study and in the particular case of wave guides.

 

 

 
Award to the best dissemination article RSEF-BBVA

Andrés Redondo Cubero, researcher at the Microelectronics Laboratory at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and CMAM researcher, has recently been awarded for the Spanish Royal Society of Physics and the BBVA Foundation for their publication "La canalización iónica en cristales: cuando la sombra de los átomos permite detectar defectos".

This article, published in the Spanish Physics Journal (Vol. 29, No. 3), has been awarded as the best article of dissemination for the correct exposure from a theoretical and experimental point of view in the channeling of energetic charged particles throughout a crystal network, a phenomenon that allows to obtain information on the location of crystalline defects.

The ceremony took place on December 14 at 19:30 hours in the Marques de Salamanca Palace, headquarters of the BBVA Foundation in Madrid.
