Title: Creating waveguides in KYW crystal using swift heavy ions

Abstract:  KY(WO4)2 (KYW) is a tungstate crystal known (when doped with Yb) for its use as a laser crystal, Raman converter and for its large third-order non-linear susceptibility. To use the crystal as part of an integrated optical circuit, it is necessary to produce slices of KYW thin enough to cause guiding, usually in the range 2-4um. As it is very hard to grow KYW on a substrate because of the crystal structure mismatch between KYW and the intended substrate (typically SiO2), other methods are investigated, including creating the guiding layer using swift heavy ion irradiation. This talk will show the results obtained in the CMAM centre in Madrid.
